Kent Hansen, CEO of Code
Code is a leading barcode scanning solution provider with over two decades of experience serving numerous industries, including retail, manufacturing, and healthcare. Having more than 120 barcode scanning patents, Code designs, develops, and manufactures image-based barcode readers, portable data terminals, data capture software, and smartphone applications. Kent Hansen, Code CEO, shares insight into his company’s leadership, “Our core competency is in decoding software that accurately collects data at first glance from barcodes that can be clean and crisp or challenging and unclear to read. This precision in data capture is crucial within retail—the machine’s ability to collect accurate data at first glance keeps workflows moving.” Leveraging this software, Code offers purpose-built devices for different industries and uses.

Code’s portfolio includes wireless and corded devices (which attach to a computer via USB cable), presentation scanners, and mobile applications. Each purpose built product offers distinct capabilities. The wireless devices are ideal for dynamic environments, such as hospitals, where a cord may impede use. Code’s USB-attached handheld devices are preferred by customers who provide them for end-users and want to avoid possible theft. The firm’s presentation scanners anchor to a table or checkout stand, allowing users to scan items without holding the device. And finally, there are Code’s mobile scanners, which have surged in popularity due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Mobile scanners support contact-free shopping—end-customers scan items and pay via smartphone, thus helping slow the transmission of viruses and bacteria.

Code solutions lead the retail industry by offering customers exceptional flexibility. Whether they need a combination of hardware and software solutions, or just the software, Code can tailor its offerings to best serve customers. The company can also help customers develop JavaScript programming that enables its barcode readers to meet application-specific needs. Hansen justifies this customer-centric approach by stating, “Code supports our customers to make lives easier and get the job done. We are a tool to help others accomplish their goals and make life simpler.”

A prime example of Code’s application-specific capabilities can be found in the service industry.

Legal drinking ages vary tremendously worldwide. To assist bars and restaurants, Code offers customized age verification for its retail-ready barcode scanners. Upon scanning an ID, the Code device intuitively emits green light if the patron is of legal age; if an issue is detected with the ID or the patron isn’t old enough, a red light appears. Automated age verification minimizes transaction and waiting times because servers and personnel needn’t manually search for and verify birthdates.

We are a tool to help others accomplish their goals and make life simpler

While Code is instrumental in preventing underage drinking, its products have taken center stage in the battle against a larger public enemy in 2020. Hansen reflects on the notable role Code’s barcode scanners had during the Coronavirus pandemic, “We proudly took part in fighting COVID-19 with our barcode readers being used extensively within healthcare.” He adds that COVID-19 tests were tracked via barcode. As Coronavirus vaccines rollout globally, Code anticipates taking an even larger role with its barcodes and decoder software supporting distribution and vaccine administration.

And because Code’s scanners are purpose-built, even their plastic housings are helping combat the virus. Select scanners use proprietary CodeShield plastics, which resist harsh chemical disinfectants despite being sanitized after each use. This capability is critical in preventing virus transmission.

Code’s devices and software have even enabled restaurants and retailers to navigate the pandemic by facilitating curbside pickup and contactless shopping. Compact mobile scanning devices free employees to quickly select, scan, and verify item pricing without cumbersome equipment.

Scanning the horizon, it’s apparent Code will continue helping businesses expedite services, economize operations, protect patients, and explore opportunities for growth amid ever-changing operational landscapes.
